Refresh Your Kitchen with Paint

Refresh Your Kitchen with Paint

The kitchen really is the heart of the home - it’s where we cook, chat, gather, and make countless cups of tea. But it’s also where surfaces take the most wear and tear. If your cabinets are looking a little tired or dated, a fresh coat of paint can make a world of difference - transforming your space without the cost, chaos, or commitment of a full renovation.

And the best bit? You don’t need to deal with strong fumes, hours of sanding, or take a week off work to do it. With the right paint, it’s simple, satisfying, and totally achievable in a weekend.

What Makes a Great Kitchen Cabinet Paint?

Kitchen cabinets have a tough job. They need to look beautiful and stand up to everyday life - splashes, fingerprints, and all.

So, what should you look for when choosing your paint? It should be:

·      Durable and easy to clean – so everyday messes don’t stress you out

·      Resistant to chips and scratches – because kitchens are busy spaces

·      Low odour or VOC-free – no harsh smells or headaches while you paint

·      Versatile – suitable for wood, MDF, or already painted surfaces

·      Quick drying and beginner-friendly – for a smooth, easy finish

Do You Need to Sand First?

Not always - but a little prep goes a long way.

Here’s a simple guide:

·      Glossy or varnished cabinets? Lightly sand to dull the shine.

·      Matte or already painted? A good clean and degrease is usually enough.

No need for hours of sanding or messy stripping - just a quick scuff with 120–180 grit sandpaper helps your paint stick beautifully.

How to Paint Your Kitchen Cabinets (Without the Hassle)

1. Clean thoroughly
Start with a deep clean using sugar soap or a good degreaser. Focus on areas around handles and the cooker - grease can be sneaky!

2. Lightly sand (not essential)
A quick scuff can help the paint grip if you have lot’s of build up on your cabinets. Wipe away dust before you start painting.

3. Remove or mask hardware
Take off handles and hinges if you can - or neatly mask them with painter’s tape.

4. Stir your paint
Even VOC-free paints need a quick stir for an even finish.

5. Apply your first coat
Use a synthetic brush for edges and corners, and a foam roller for larger, flat surfaces. Always follow the direction of the wood grain.

6. Wait 4 hours, then apply your second coat
The second coat adds depth and durability. If you notice any tiny bumps, a light sand between coats gives a perfectly smooth finish.

7. Let it cure
Your cabinets will be touch-dry in an hour but give them 7–14 days before heavy use. That extra patience is worth it

Tools of the Trade

Here’s what you’ll need for a flawless finish:

·      Foam roller: For smooth, streak-free doors

·      Angled synthetic brush: Great for corners and detailed edges
